Traumatic Brain Injury & Concussion

Brain injuries should always be taken very seriously. Learn the warning signs, and seek care as soon as possible.

Suffered a traumatic brain injury or concussion? Get the compensation you deserve with NL’s largest and most experienced personal injury law firm.

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be extremely damaging. Even a mild TBI – like a concussion – may result in ongoing issues, added treatment and childcare costs, and missed time from work.

Traumatic Brain Injury Effects

Traumatic brain injuries are caused by a sudden blow or jolt to the head (known as a non-penetrating TBI) or by an object entering the brain (known as a penetrating TBI). Many TBIs go undetected upon examination and their effects are often perceived to be the result of a separate medical issue.

Those suffering from a TBI may experience issues around brain function in the short term, like disrupted thought patterns and a lack of concentration. TBIs may also affect behaviour, mood, and motor skills. In light to moderate cases, symptoms may be temporary. More severe TBIs can lead to permanent disability and may even be fatal.

TBI Warning Signs

Since every brain is unique, so too is every traumatic brain injury. Traumatic brain injuries affect every person differently. If you have recently suffered a blow to or jolting of the head, watch for these TBI warning signs:

  • Physical: headache, blurred vision, nausea, changes in speech, uneven pupils, poor balance, drainage of clear fluid from ears or nose, body movement issues, and seizures.
  • Cognitive/Behavioural: disorientation, loss of consciousness, loss of memory, confusion, anxiety, changes in sleep patterns, and irritability.
  • Perception: hearing loss, vision loss, vertigo, changes to taste, light sensitivity, and overall drowsiness.

If you believe you may have suffered a concussion or other traumatic brain injury, seek medical help immediately.
