Protect yourself and your family with SEF44 insurance

Over the course of a lifetime, an injury can affect everything from mobility to cognitive function, and everything in between. This can impact a person’s ability to work and earn wages, care for their family, and to enjoy life to the fullest. One accident is all it takes.

That is why drivers in Newfoundland and Labrador are required to carry at least $200,000 in Section A insurance. Also known as Third Party Liability insurance, Section A provides coverage for the insured at-fault driver and/or the registered owner of the vehicle in the event their negligence results in injury, death or property damage to a third party.

However, while $200,000 may be enough to cover minor injuries, many of those we’ve seen in the past 40 years have been more severe, with lasting and sometimes lifelong effects. In these cases, $200,000 just doesn’t cut it. So, what happens then? That’s where an SEF44 can come in.

SEF44, or the Family Protection Endorsement as it’s called in the industry, is an optional automobile insurance add-on that protects drivers and passengers in the event they sustain injuries from an underinsured driver.

Here’s how it works: let’s say a driver increases their Section A limits to $1,000,000, and the next day they’re involved in an accident, with multiple passengers in the car. The damages and injuries sustained in the accident will surely surpass $200,000, but it turns out that the at-fault party is only carrying the minimum required automobile insurance liability limits of $200,000. SEF44 insurance protects the injured party in cases like this by effectively transferring their Section A limit to the at-fault party. In other words, the injured party’s insurance limit overrides that of the at-fault party, meaning their injuries and damages will be covered up to $1,000,000.

Obtaining SEF44 insurance can provide peace-of-mind. We’ve seen what an injury can do to a person over the course of a lifetime. SEF44 can help protect you and your family down the road. Because one accident can change everything.
